Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need both torque and RPM to calculate horsepower?

Horsepower measures the rate of doing work, so it depends on how fast the engine is spinning, not just how much twisting force (torque) it produces. The same torque at a higher RPM produces more horsepower.

Where does the 5,252 constant come from?

It comes from converting foot-pounds and RPM into horsepower units: one horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds per minute, and one revolution equals 2 pi radians, giving 33,000 divided by 2 pi, which is approximately 5,252.11.

Why do torque and horsepower curves always cross at 5,252 RPM?

At exactly 5,252 RPM, the torque and horsepower values are mathematically equal by definition of the formula, which is why dyno charts always show the two curves intersecting at that RPM.
