What is basal area used for?
Basal area is a standard forestry measure of how much of a stand cross-sectional ground area is occupied by tree trunks, used to assess stand density and inform thinning and management decisions.
Where does the 0.005454 constant come from?
It is a simplified conversion, sometimes called the foresters constant, derived from the circle area formula and a unit conversion so that a DBH measured in inches produces a basal area directly in square feet.
How is basal area per acre calculated?
Summing the basal area of every tree measured within a known sample area, then scaling that total up to a full acre, gives basal area per acre, a common stand-density metric in forestry.
