Why measure circumference instead of diameter directly?
Circumference is far easier to measure accurately on a standing tree, simply by wrapping a tape measure around the trunk, while diameter would require calipers spanning the full width of the trunk.
Where should circumference be measured?
Standard practice measures circumference at breast height, commonly defined as 4.5 feet above ground level, giving a consistent reference point across different trees and measurements.
How can bark thickness affect this measurement?
Circumference measured over the bark includes the bark thickness in the result. For applications needing the diameter of the wood itself, subtracting twice the bark thickness from the over-bark diameter gives the diameter under bark.
