Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the sample taken from 1/1000 of an acre?
A 1/1000-acre sample is a standard, manageable plot size for counting ears and kernels by hand in the field, which the formula then scales up by a factor of 1,000 to estimate the full-acre yield.
Why does kernel size matter?
Kernel size determines roughly how many kernels make up one bushel, ranging from about 120,000 kernels per bushel for small kernels down to about 80,000 for large kernels, which directly affects the yield estimate.
How accurate is this pre-harvest estimate?
This method gives a useful early estimate before harvest, but actual yield can vary from the estimate due to factors like ear count variability across the field, weather between sampling and harvest, and harvest losses.
