Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dihybrid cross?
A dihybrid cross tracks two different genes at the same time, assuming the two genes are inherited independently of each other. The result is nine possible genotype combinations instead of the three from a single-gene cross.
Why are there nine possible outcomes?
Each gene independently produces three possible genotypes (homozygous dominant, heterozygous, homozygous recessive), and the two genes combine independently, giving three times three, or nine, total combinations.
What if the two genes are not inherited independently?
Genes located close together on the same chromosome tend to be inherited together rather than independently, a phenomenon called genetic linkage. This calculator assumes independent assortment, the standard simplifying case taught for a dihybrid cross.
