A rabbit needs enough room to take at least a few real hops inside its enclosure, not just enough space to lie down, so the length dimension uses hop distance rather than body length to keep the space genuinely usable.
Do rabbits need space outside their cage too?
Yes, most rabbit welfare guidance recommends supervised daily exercise time in an area well beyond the cage itself, since even a generously sized cage does not replace regular time to run and stretch.
Should multiple rabbits share one cage?
Multiple rabbits sharing a space need meaningfully more total room than the minimum for one rabbit, not just the same cage, both for exercise area and to reduce potential territorial stress between them.
