Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there a 50-gallon minimum even for a small turtle?
Most commonly kept pet turtle species eventually grow to a size needing at least 50 gallons, so starting with a smaller tank often means an unwanted upgrade later. Setting a 50-gallon floor avoids that near-certain future replacement.
Should I size the tank for my turtle current size or its adult size?
Sizing for adult size from the start is generally recommended, since turtles can grow substantially and re-housing an established turtle into a new tank can be stressful for the animal.
Does this account for tank height, not just gallons?
No, this gives a total volume target only. Turtles also need enough water depth to swim comfortably and, for many species, a dry basking area above the waterline, which affects how that volume should be shaped.
