Frequently Asked Questions

What is a leaf area index?

Leaf area index (LAI) is the ratio of total leaf surface area layered above a patch of ground to that ground area, accounting for leaves overlapping in multiple canopy layers. A typical deciduous tree has an LAI around 4 to 6.

How does the sample plate work?

Counting how many leaves it takes to fully cover a plate of a known size gives a leaf density figure, in leaves per unit area, that can then be scaled up to the much larger area of the full tree crown.

Why multiply crown area by the leaf area index instead of just leaf density?

Leaf density alone assumes a single flat layer of leaves. Multiplying by the leaf area index accounts for the fact that a real tree canopy has multiple overlapping layers of leaves stacked above the same ground area.
