Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the picket overlap matter?
Board-on-board fences deliberately overlap adjacent pickets so gaps do not appear as the wood naturally shrinks over time. A commonly recommended overlap is about 24 percent of the picket width, enough to cover typical shrinkage of up to around 12 percent on each side.
How is the picket count calculated?
Each additional picket effectively adds its width minus the overlap amount to the covered length, since part of it sits behind the previous picket. Dividing the remaining fence length by that effective width, then adding 1 for the starting picket, gives the total count.
Does this include rails?
No, this version calculates pickets and posts only. Rail count depends on fence height and how many horizontal rail rows the design uses, typically two for a standard-height fence and three for a taller one.
