Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the default ratio 0.33?
A commonly cited rule of thumb is that the buried portion of a fence post should be at least one third of its above-ground height, to resist wind and lateral pressure on the fence.
When should I use a deeper ratio?
Increase the ratio for taller fences, high-wind areas, loose or sandy soil, or heavier fence styles like privacy or vinyl panels. A local frost line depth requirement may also set a minimum regardless of this ratio.
Does this account for a concrete footing width?
No, this calculates depth and post length only. Concrete volume for the footing itself should be estimated separately based on the hole diameter.
