How is stud count calculated?
Wall length is divided by the on-center spacing to get the number of spacing intervals, then one more stud is added for the starting end of the wall, matching the standard framing convention of placing a stud at both the start and at every spacing interval after.
What on-center spacing should I use?
16 inches on-center is the most common spacing for standard residential wall framing in North America, though 24 inches is sometimes used for advanced framing techniques designed to reduce lumber use and improve energy efficiency.
Does this include king studs, jack studs, or headers for openings?
No, this calculates the standard field studs along the wall length only. Door and window openings need additional king studs, jack studs, and a header, which should be counted and added separately.
