Frequently Asked Questions
How is pipe volume calculated?
The pipe is treated as a cylinder: the internal cross-sectional area, pi times the inner radius squared, is multiplied by the pipe length to get volume, then converted to gallons.
What density should I use for water?
62.4 pounds per cubic foot is the standard density of fresh water at room temperature, the default here. Other liquids, such as saltwater or fuel, have different densities and will hold a different mass in the same pipe volume.
Does this account for pipe wall thickness?
No, this uses the inner diameter directly, which already excludes the wall thickness, since that is the actual space available for liquid inside the pipe.
