How is pipe weight calculated?
The pipe wall's cross-sectional area, the outer circle area minus the inner circle area, is multiplied by the pipe length to get the material volume, then multiplied by the material density to get weight.
What densities does this use?
In pounds per cubic foot: steel 490, aluminum 169, copper 559, brass 530, and PVC 87, the same metal densities already used elsewhere on this site for consistency, plus a commonly cited PVC plastic density.
Does wall thickness matter more than diameter for weight?
Both matter, but for a given wall thickness, weight scales roughly with the pipe's average circumference, so larger diameter pipes of the same wall thickness are meaningfully heavier per foot than smaller ones.
