Frequently Asked Questions
What tank shapes does this cover?
A vertical cylinder, like a standard drum or upright storage tank, and a rectangular prism, like a stock tank or built tank. These are the two most common and most structurally distinct shapes; other shapes, such as a horizontal cylinder or a cone-bottom tank, need different formulas not included in this simplified version.
How is cylinder volume calculated?
The circular cross-sectional area, pi times radius squared, is multiplied by the height, then converted from cubic inches to gallons using 231 cubic inches per gallon.
Does this give the volume when partially filled?
No, this calculates the tank's full capacity at the given height. For a partially filled horizontal cylinder in particular, the fill-level geometry is more complex and is not covered by this simplified calculator.
