Pond Calculator
Construction & Home ImprovementCalculate the water volume and liner size needed for a rectangular or round garden pond.
Water Volume
Estimated water volume the pond holds, in US gallons.
Liner Size Needed
15.00
Liner length needed (round: diameter; rectangle: length), accounting for depth and edge overlap on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is pond volume calculated?
The surface area, length times width for a rectangle or pi times radius squared for a round pond, is multiplied by the average depth to get volume, then converted to gallons.
How is liner size calculated?
The liner needs to reach down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side, plus extra to overlap and anchor at the edge. That means adding twice the depth, plus twice the edge overlap, to each of the pond's flat dimensions.
Does this account for sloped pond sides?
No, this assumes vertical sides for a simpler, conservative volume estimate. A pond with sloped sides holds somewhat less water than this calculation suggests, since the walls taper inward toward the bottom.
