Frequently Asked Questions

How is board coverage calculated?

Each board covers its width, converted to feet, times its length, giving the area one board covers. The total project area, plus the waste factor, is divided by that per-board coverage to get the board count.

Does board width include the overlap or reveal?

No, this uses the full board width for simplicity. For shiplap with a visible reveal gap between boards, the true covered width is slightly less than the full board width, so consider using that smaller effective width instead for a more precise count.

What waste factor should I use for a ceiling?

A ceiling installation often needs a slightly higher waste factor than a wall, commonly 10 to 15 percent, due to more cutting around fixtures and edges.
