Frequently Asked Questions

How is panel width calculated?

The wall length, minus the two end margins and one gap width, is divided evenly across the number of panels, then one more gap width is subtracted from each share, since every panel except the calculation basis has a gap on one side included in that division.

What is the difference between Shadow Box and Recessed Panel styles?

Both styles use the same overall width and height math. Shadow box wainscoting uses applied strips to create a raised frame look, while recessed panel wainscoting uses routed or inset panels for a flush look, a construction technique difference rather than a dimensional one.

Why subtract cap molding from the height?

Cap molding sits on top of the panel assembly and takes up some of the total wainscoting height, so the panel itself needs to be shorter than the full height by the cap molding depth, along with the baseboard and top and bottom rail margins.
