How is siding area calculated?
Wall width times height gives the raw wall area. The area of each door and window is subtracted, since those openings do not need siding, then the waste factor is added back on top for cutting losses.
How do I calculate a gable wall?
For a triangular gable end, calculate it as a rectangle using the full width and the peak height, then divide the result by 2 to account for the triangular shape, before subtracting any openings.
What waste factor should I use?
10 percent is a common default for a straightforward wall. Increase it for a wall with many corners, a complex shape, or a siding style like diagonal or shiplap that has more angled cuts.
