The Apgar score is a quick assessment of a newborn babys condition at 1 and 5 minutes after birth, based on 5 factors: appearance, pulse, grimace response, activity, and respiration, each scored 0 to 2.
What is considered a normal Apgar score?
A score of 7 to 10 is generally considered reassuring. Scores of 4 to 6 are moderately abnormal and may call for some resuscitative measures, while scores of 0 to 3 indicate a need for immediate medical attention.
Is a low Apgar score a diagnosis of a health problem?
Not on its own. The Apgar score is a snapshot assessment, not a diagnostic tool, and is typically taken again at 5 minutes to track how a newborn is responding. It should always be interpreted by a qualified healthcare provider.
