What is APRI used for?
APRI is a simple, non-invasive score used to estimate the likelihood of significant liver fibrosis or cirrhosis, most often studied in patients with chronic hepatitis C, without needing a liver biopsy.
How reliable is APRI compared to a liver biopsy?
APRI is a useful screening estimate but is less precise than a liver biopsy or elastography. It performs best at excluding cirrhosis at low scores and suggesting cirrhosis at high scores, with more uncertainty in the middle range.
What AST upper limit should be used?
The laboratory-specific upper limit of normal for AST should be used if known; 40 IU/L is a commonly cited default reference value.
