Frequently Asked Questions
What does the AST/ALT ratio suggest?
A ratio above 2 strongly suggests alcoholic liver disease, a ratio above 1 may suggest cirrhosis of any cause, and a ratio below 1 is more typical of non-alcoholic causes like viral hepatitis or drug-induced liver injury.
Does the ratio matter if both enzymes are normal?
The ratio is most meaningful when at least one enzyme is elevated. A high ratio with both enzymes in the normal range may instead point toward a non-liver cause, such as muscle breakdown or thyroid disease.
Should this ratio be used alone to diagnose liver disease?
No. It is one piece of a larger clinical picture and should always be interpreted alongside the actual patient history, other lab values, and imaging when needed.
Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?
No. This is an educational reference implementation of the standard AST/ALT ratio, not a substitute for a physicians clinical assessment.
