Frequently Asked Questions

What is FIB-4 used for?

FIB-4 is a widely used non-invasive score that estimates the likelihood of advanced liver fibrosis using routine lab values and age, helping decide which patients may need further liver evaluation.

Why does age matter so much in this formula?

FIB-4 was validated primarily in adults aged 35 to 65. Outside that age range, especially in younger patients, the score can produce more false positives and should be interpreted with extra caution.

How does FIB-4 compare to APRI?

Both are simple non-invasive fibrosis scores using routine labs. FIB-4 additionally incorporates age and is generally considered to have somewhat better diagnostic accuracy in several validation studies, though both are used complementarily.

Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?

No. This is an educational reference implementation of the standard FIB-4 formula, not a substitute for a physicians clinical assessment.
