Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Child-Pugh score used for?
The Child-Pugh score assesses the severity of chronic liver disease, most often cirrhosis, and is used to estimate prognosis and guide treatment decisions such as surgical risk or transplant priority.
What is the difference between Child-Pugh Class A, B, and C?
Class A (5-6 points) indicates well-compensated liver function with the best prognosis, Class B (7-9 points) indicates significant functional compromise, and Class C (10-15 points) indicates decompensated disease with the poorest prognosis.
How is Child-Pugh different from MELD score?
Child-Pugh uses a mix of lab values and clinical assessments (ascites and encephalopathy are subjectively graded), while MELD is a purely lab-value-based formula. Both are used in liver disease severity assessment, sometimes together.
Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?
No. This is an educational reference implementation of the standard Child-Pugh scoring system, not a substitute for a physicians clinical assessment.
