Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MELD score used for?

The MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) score estimates 90-day mortality risk in patients with chronic liver disease and is widely used to prioritize patients on liver transplant waiting lists.

Which version of the MELD formula does this calculator use?

This uses the classic 3-variable formula based on creatinine, bilirubin, and INR. A newer MELD-Na revision that also incorporates sodium levels exists and is used in some transplant allocation systems, but is not included here.

Why are lab values floored at a minimum of 1.0?

The MELD formula uses natural logarithms, which are undefined or produce unreliable results for values below 1.0. The standard convention sets any input below 1.0 to 1.0 before calculating.

Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?

No. This is an educational reference implementation of the classic MELD scoring formula, not a substitute for a physicians clinical assessment or an official transplant-allocation MELD calculation.
