Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Katch-McArdle formula?
Unlike most BMR formulas that use total body weight, the Katch-McArdle formula calculates BMR directly from lean body mass, which can make it more accurate for people who are notably muscular or have unusually high or low body fat.
How do I find my lean body mass?
Lean body mass is your total weight minus your body fat mass. You can estimate it using a body fat percentage measurement (such as a skinfold or bioelectrical impedance test) or a dedicated lean body mass calculator.
Why might this be more accurate than weight-based formulas?
Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. Two people of the same total weight but very different muscle mass will have genuinely different BMRs, which weight-based formulas cannot capture but lean-mass-based formulas can.
Is this formula suitable for everyone?
It works well for anyone who has a reasonably accurate lean body mass measurement. If you only know your total weight, a weight-based formula like Mifflin-St Jeor or Harris-Benedict is more practical.
