What is the Harris-Benedict equation?

The Harris-Benedict equation is one of the earliest and most widely-used formulas for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate, developed in 1919 and later revised.

How is this different from Mifflin-St Jeor?

Both formulas estimate BMR from weight, height, age, and sex, but use different coefficients derived from different research populations. Mifflin-St Jeor is generally considered a somewhat more accurate modern alternative for most people, while Harris-Benedict remains a classic reference point still widely used.
