Frequently Asked Questions

How is RMR different from BMR?

BMR reflects calorie needs at complete rest with an empty stomach. RMR adds the thermic effect of food, the energy your body spends digesting and processing meals, which typically increases calorie burn by about 5 to 10 percent over BMR.

Why is there a range instead of one exact percentage?

The thermic effect of food varies by individual and by the composition of what is eaten, so this calculator lets you choose a low, average, or high estimate within the commonly-cited 5 to 10 percent range rather than presenting one number as universally exact.

Is RMR the same as maintenance calories?

Not quite. RMR and BMR both only reflect calories burned at rest. Total maintenance calories also add the energy spent on daily activity and exercise on top of RMR.

Which foods have the highest thermic effect?

Protein generally has the highest thermic effect of the three macronutrients, often estimated at 20 to 30 percent of its own calories, compared to lower percentages for carbohydrates and fats.
