What is cerebral perfusion pressure used for?
CPP estimates the net pressure driving blood flow to the brain, calculated as mean arterial pressure minus intracranial pressure, and is closely monitored in traumatic brain injury and other neurocritical care conditions.
What CPP level is dangerously low?
A CPP below about 40 mmHg in adults is generally considered a critical risk for brain ischemia, since blood flow to brain tissue may become inadequate.
Why does the normal range depend on age?
Normal blood pressure and intracranial dynamics differ significantly between children and adults, so the target CPP range is adjusted by age group, from roughly 30-40 mmHg in young children up to 60-80 mmHg in adults.
