Frequently Asked Questions
Why is FFMI better than BMI for athletes?
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so muscular athletes are often misclassified as "overweight" by BMI alone — FFMI isolates lean (fat-free) mass relative to height, giving a more accurate picture of muscularity.
What is a typical natural FFMI range?
Most natural (non-enhanced) male lifters max out around an FFMI of 25, with very elite genetics occasionally reaching 26-27 — values significantly above this are often considered a signal of performance-enhancing drug use in research contexts.
Does FFMI apply the same way to women?
FFMI is most commonly referenced using male-oriented research benchmarks; female FFMI ranges and typical natural limits differ and are less extensively studied, so direct comparison to male benchmarks isn't appropriate.
