Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Navy body fat method?

It is a body fat estimation method developed by the US Navy that uses circumference measurements (neck, waist, and for women, hips) along with height, instead of skinfold calipers or a scale.

How accurate is the Navy method compared to other methods?

The Navy method is reasonably accurate for most people and is easy to measure without special equipment, though it can be less precise for people with atypical body compositions, such as very muscular athletes.

Why does the formula need hip circumference for women but not men?

Women tend to carry more fat in the hip area, so the female formula includes hip circumference to better capture overall body fat distribution. The male formula relies on neck and waist alone.

How should I measure my neck and waist for this calculator?

Measure your neck just below the larynx, at the bump at the front of the throat, and measure your waist at the navel while breathing out normally. Keep the tape measure level and snug but not compressing the skin.
