Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Durnin-Womersley skinfold method?

It is a widely-used method for estimating body fat percentage from four skinfold thickness measurements (tricep, bicep, subscapular, and suprailiac), using age- and sex-specific formulas developed by Durnin and Womersley in 1974.

How do I measure a skinfold correctly?

Use skinfold calipers to pinch a fold of skin and fat (not muscle) at each site and read the thickness in millimeters. Taking the average of two or three measurements at each site improves accuracy.

Why does the formula change with age and sex?

The relationship between skinfold thickness and total body density shifts with age and differs between men and women, so separate formulas are used for each age bracket and sex to keep the estimate accurate.

How accurate is the skinfold method?

When measured correctly with calipers by an experienced person, skinfold methods are reasonably accurate, though they can vary more than methods like DEXA scans. Consistent technique matters more than any single reading.
