What is the Padua Prediction Score used for?
The Padua Score assesses the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE, blood clots) in hospitalized medical (non-surgical) patients, helping decide whether blood-thinning medication is warranted for prevention.
What Padua score requires medication for prevention?
A score of 4 or higher is generally considered high risk, at which point pharmacological prophylaxis (blood-thinning medication) is typically recommended, unless bleeding risk is also high.
What is used for low-risk patients instead?
For patients with a low Padua score, mechanical prophylaxis, such as compression stockings or intermittent pneumatic compression devices, is generally considered sufficient rather than medication.
