Total body water as a percentage of body weight differs by age and sex, generally around 60% for children and adult males, 50% for adult females and elderly males, and 45% for elderly females, mainly due to differences in body fat percentage.

Why is slow correction emphasized?

Correcting sodium too quickly in chronic hyponatremia can cause osmotic demyelination syndrome, a serious and potentially permanent neurological injury, so correction is generally limited to about 0.5 mEq/L per hour.
