Frequently Asked Questions
What is arcsine?
Arcsine (also written sin^-1) is the inverse of the sine function: given a sine value, it finds the angle that produces it. If sin(y) = x, then arcsin(x) = y.
Why is the input restricted to between -1 and 1?
Sine only ever produces outputs between -1 and 1, so there is no angle whose sine falls outside that range, making any other input invalid.
Why does arcsine only return one angle?
Sine repeats infinitely (many angles share the same sine value), so arcsine is defined to always return the one result between -90 and 90 degrees, called the principal value, rather than every possible angle.
