Frequently Asked Questions
What is arccosine?
Arccosine (also written cos^-1) is the inverse of the cosine function: given a cosine value, it finds the angle that produces it. If cos(y) = x, then arccos(x) = y.
Why is the input restricted to between -1 and 1?
Cosine only ever produces outputs between -1 and 1, so there is no angle whose cosine falls outside that range.
What range does arccosine return?
Arccosine always returns its principal value between 0 and 180 degrees, the standard convention for picking one answer out of cosine's infinitely repeating values.
