What are cylindrical coordinates?

Cylindrical coordinates describe a point in 3D space using a radial distance (rho) from the z-axis, an angle (theta) around the z-axis, and a height (z), extending 2D polar coordinates into three dimensions.

Why does this calculator only convert from Cartesian to cylindrical?

This covers the more common direction (converting measured x, y, z coordinates into cylindrical form). To convert the other way, use x = rho*cos(theta), y = rho*sin(theta), and z stays the same.

Why use atan2 instead of a plain arctangent for theta?

A plain arctan(y/x) cannot tell which quadrant the point is in and fails when x is 0. atan2(y,x) handles all four quadrants correctly and always returns an angle in the range (-180, 180].
