Spherical Coordinates Calculator
MathConvert a point from Cartesian (x, y, z) coordinates to spherical (r, theta, phi) coordinates.
Radial Distance (r)
Straight-line distance from the origin to the point, sqrt(x^2+y^2+z^2).
Polar Angle (theta, degrees)
54.7356
Angle measured down from the positive z-axis, from 0 to 180 degrees.
Azimuth Angle (phi, degrees)
45.0000
Angle around the z-axis, measured in the xy-plane from the positive x-axis, in the range (-180, 180].

Frequently Asked Questions
What are spherical coordinates?
Spherical coordinates describe a point using a radial distance (r) from the origin, a polar angle (theta) measured down from the z-axis, and an azimuth angle (phi) measured around the z-axis in the xy-plane.
How is this different from cylindrical coordinates?
Cylindrical coordinates keep a straight-line height (z) and only convert the x-y part to polar form. Spherical coordinates instead measure the direct distance from the origin and use two angles, which is common in physics and navigation.
Why does this calculator only convert from Cartesian to spherical?
This covers the more common direction. To convert the other way, use x = r*sin(theta)*cos(phi), y = r*sin(theta)*sin(phi), and z = r*cos(theta).
