What does a negative exponent mean?
A negative exponent means take the reciprocal of the base raised to the corresponding positive exponent: b^-x = 1 / b^x. For example, 10^-2 = 1/10^2 = 1/100 = 0.01.
Why does a negative exponent make the result smaller?
Since it represents 1 divided by a growing power of the base, the result shrinks toward zero as the (positive) magnitude of the exponent increases, for a base greater than 1.
What happens with a negative base?
The sign of the result alternates depending on whether the exponent (ignoring its negative sign) is even or odd, following the same rule as positive-exponent powers of negative numbers.
