Frequently Asked Questions

What is a radical?

A radical, written as the nth root of x, is the value that when raised to the power n gives back x. A radical of degree 2 is a square root, degree 3 is a cube root, and so on.

Can a radical be taken of a negative number?

Yes, but only when the degree is odd. An odd-degree root of a negative number is a real negative number, for example the cube root of -8 is -2. An even-degree root of a negative number has no real result.

How is a radical related to a fractional exponent?

They are the same thing written two ways: the nth root of x equals x raised to the power 1/n.
