Frequently Asked Questions
What is a rational exponent?
A rational exponent is a fractional power, written as b^(m/n). It combines a root and a power: raise the base to the numerator's power, then take the denominator's root of the result (or do it in the opposite order, both give the same answer).
What is an example of a rational exponent?
8 raised to the power 2/3 means the cube root of 8, squared: the cube root of 8 is 2, and 2 squared is 4.
Why does this calculator require a positive base?
A fractional exponent applied to a negative base does not always produce a real number (it depends on whether the reduced denominator is odd or even), so this calculator is scoped to positive bases, which always give a well-defined real result.
