How does this experiment estimate pi?

It uses the classic pizza-cutting demonstration: cutting a circle into slices and rearranging them into an approximate rectangle whose width is the circle's radius and whose length is half the circumference. Since a true circle's area equals pi times radius squared, and this rearranged rectangle's area is length times width, measuring the rearranged length and dividing by the radius gives an estimate of pi.

Why won't this give exactly 3.14159?

This is a physical measurement experiment, not a symbolic calculation, so it is subject to real-world measurement error, cutting imprecision, and how finely the circle was sliced. More and thinner slices produce a result closer to the true value of pi.

Is this a serious way to calculate pi?

It is an educational demonstration rather than a precise computational method. It is a hands-on way to build intuition for why pi connects a circle's circumference to its radius, not a substitute for the many precise mathematical methods used to compute pi to many decimal places.
