Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for both cones and pyramids?

Yes. For a cone, enter the base radius. For a right-angled pyramid, enter half the base edge length. Both shapes use the same right-triangle relationship between height, base measurement, and slant height.

How is this different from the slant height of a cone calculator?

This is the general-purpose version covering both cones and pyramids using a single generic base measurement. The dedicated cone calculator is cone-specific and also supports solving from an angle when the radius or height is unknown.

Why does the base need to be at a right angle to the height?

The Pythagorean-theorem formula only applies when the height and the base measurement meet at a 90-degree angle, which is true for a right circular cone or a right-angled pyramid, but not for oblique versions of either shape.
