Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tangent ratio?

In a right triangle, the tangent ratio for a given angle is the length of the side opposite that angle divided by the length of the side adjacent to it.

How is this different from the tan calculator?

The tan calculator starts with a known angle and finds its tangent value. This calculator works in reverse: it starts with two known leg lengths, computes their ratio, and then finds the angle that produces that ratio.

Why use the inverse tangent to find the angle?

Since tangent maps an angle to a ratio, going the other direction, from a known ratio back to the angle, requires the inverse tangent (arctangent) function.
