Unit Conversion calculators
This calculator converts a temperature in degrees Celsius to Rankine using the exact formula: multiply the Celsius value by 9/5, then add 491.67. Rankine is an absolute temperature scale mostly used in specific US engineering and thermodynamics work, so this conversion mainly comes up when a Celsius measurement, common almost everywhere outside the US, needs to be expressed in the Fahrenheit sized, no negative values scale that those calculations expect.
Unlike the Rankine to Kelvin pairing, which only needs a resizing factor because both scales share the same zero point, Celsius and Rankine disagree on where zero sits, so this formula needs both a resize and an offset. Celsius puts zero at the freezing point of water, while Rankine puts zero at absolute zero, -273.15°C. Because Rankine cannot go below its own zero, this calculator floors its result at 0°R for any Celsius value below -273.15°C.
For the reverse direction, converting a Rankine value into Celsius, or converting to Fahrenheit or Kelvin instead, see the related converters below.
Celsius to Rankine conversion table
This table covers common Celsius values, including several below zero, since Celsius readily goes negative even though the resulting Rankine value never does.
| Celsius | Rankine |
|---|---|
| -273.15°C | 0°R |
| -40°C | 419.67°R |
| -20°C | 455.67°R |
| 0°C | 491.67°R |
| 20°C | 527.67°R |
| 37°C | 558.27°R |
| 100°C | 671.67°R |
The Celsius to Rankine formula
To convert Celsius to Rankine, multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (or 1.8), then add 491.67. For example, 20°C multiplied by 1.8 equals 36, plus 491.67 equals 527.67°R.
To go the other way, from Rankine back to Celsius, subtract 491.67 first, then divide by 1.8. For example, 527.67°R minus 491.67 equals 36, divided by 1.8 equals 20°C. For the Fahrenheit or Kelvin scale instead, use the Celsius to Fahrenheit or Kelvin to Rankine converters.
Where the 491.67 offset comes from
The 491.67 constant in this formula is not arbitrary, it is simply the freezing point of water, 0 Celsius, expressed on the Rankine scale. Since Celsius and Rankine put their zero points in different places, converting between them needs both a resizing step, to account for the different degree sizes, and an offset step, to shift from one zero point to the other. That is the same two-part structure used for the Celsius to Fahrenheit formula, just with a different constant.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula to convert Celsius to Rankine?
Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (or 1.8), then add 491.67. For example, 0°C multiplied by 1.8 equals 0, plus 491.67 equals 491.67°R.
What is 0 degrees Celsius in Rankine?
0°C, the freezing point of water, equals 491.67°R.
Can the Rankine result ever be negative?
No. Rankine is an absolute scale with a true zero point at absolute zero, so this calculator floors its result at 0°R for any Celsius input below -273.15°C, the coldest temperature physically possible.
What is 100 degrees Celsius in Rankine?
100°C, the boiling point of water, equals 671.67°R.
Why does this formula need both a multiplication and an addition?
Celsius and Rankine use differently sized degrees and different zero points, so converting between them needs a resizing factor (9/5) for the degree size and an offset (491.67) to shift between the two zero points, the same two-step structure as the Celsius to Fahrenheit formula.
What is normal human body temperature in Rankine?
Normal body temperature, about 37°C, is approximately 558.27°R.
Where is the Rankine scale actually used?
Rankine mainly shows up in specific US engineering and thermodynamics fields, such as some aerospace and mechanical engineering calculations, where formulas are already built around Fahrenheit sized degrees but still need an absolute, no negative values scale.
