An acre is 43,560 square feet. NIST defines it as 10 square chains, a chain being 66 feet, which also makes it 4,840 square yards and one 640th of a square mile. The acre has no fixed shape: a lot of 43,560 square feet is one acre whether it is square, long and thin, or irregular.

How Big Is an Acre
As a square, an acre is about 208.71 feet, or about 63.61 meters, on each side. As a long strip it is one chain by one furlong, 66 feet by 660 feet, the shape NIST's definitions build it from. An American football field with its end zones, 360 by 160 feet, is about 1.32 acres, so an acre is about three quarters of a field. Fencing a square acre takes about 834.8 feet, four sides of about 208.71 feet.

How to Calculate Acreage
- Measure the lot's sides in feet.
- For a rectangle, multiply length by width to get square feet. A lot 150 feet by 290.4 feet is 43,560 square feet.
- Divide by 43,560 to get acres. That lot is exactly 1 acre.

Map tools give a quick area by tracing a boundary on a satellite image, which is fine for planning but not for a sale. A deed or a licensed survey gives the legal acreage, and the two can differ.

US listings give land in acres and buildings in square feet, so a 0.25-acre lot with a 2,000 square foot house is 10,890 square feet of land.
