Unit Conversion calculators
This calculator converts a speed in miles per hour to kilometers per hour using the exact factor: multiply the mph value by 1.609344. Both the international mile and the kilometer are fixed, precisely defined distances, so this conversion carries no rounding error, unlike some other unit conversions that only work out to an approximate figure.
Mph is the everyday road-speed unit in the US and the UK, while km/h is used almost everywhere else, so this conversion comes up constantly for drivers crossing borders, athletes comparing race speeds, and anyone reading a vehicle spec sheet written for a different market. A car traveling at 60 mph, for example, is moving at just over 96.5 km/h.
For the reverse direction, converting km/h back into mph, or converting mph into meters per second or knots instead, see the related converters below.
MPH to KM/H conversion table
This table covers common driving, cycling, and high-speed reference points.
| Miles per Hour | Kilometers per Hour |
|---|---|
| 0 mph | 0 km/h |
| 30 mph | 48.28 km/h |
| 60 mph | 96.56 km/h |
| 70 mph | 112.65 km/h |
| 80 mph | 128.75 km/h |
| 100 mph | 160.93 km/h |
| 120 mph | 193.12 km/h |
| 200 mph | 321.87 km/h |
The MPH to KM/H formula
To convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour, multiply the mph value by 1.609344. For example, 70 mph times 1.609344 equals 112.65 km/h.
To go the other way, from km/h back to mph, divide by 1.609344 instead. For example, 112.65 km/h divided by 1.609344 equals 70 mph. For meters per second or knots instead, use the MPH to Meters per Second or MPH to Knots converters below.
Why 1.609344 is an exact figure
The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the international mile at exactly 1,609.344 meters, replacing several slightly different national mile definitions the US, UK, and others had each used before that point. Since a kilometer is also an exact 1,000 meters, the 1.609344 conversion factor between mph and km/h carries no rounding error at all.
MPH vs KM/H around the world
The United States and the United Kingdom are the two major countries that still use mph for road speeds and vehicle speedometers; nearly every other country standardized on km/h decades ago, following the metric system’s broader adoption. A US-market car sold in Europe typically has a speedometer marked in km/h instead, with the same underlying mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula to convert mph to km/h?
Multiply the mph value by 1.609344. For example, 60 mph times 1.609344 equals 96.56 km/h.
Is the mph to km/h conversion exact or approximate?
It is exact. Both the international mile, 1,609.344 meters, and the kilometer are precisely fixed distances, so the 1.609344 factor carries no rounding error.
What is 1 mph in km/h?
1 mile per hour equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers per hour.
How fast is 100 mph in km/h?
100 mph equals 160.93 km/h.
Why do some countries use mph and others use km/h?
Mph is a holdover from the imperial measurement system, still used for road speeds in the United States and the United Kingdom. Most other countries switched to the metric system, and with it km/h, over the 19th and 20th centuries.
Is mph to km/h the same conversion as mph to kmh?
Yes, km/h and kmh refer to the identical unit, kilometers per hour, just written with or without the slash. The conversion factor and result are exactly the same either way.
Can an mph-to-km/h result be negative?
No. Speed is a non-negative magnitude in this context, so this calculator floors its result at 0 km/h for an mph value of 0 or below.
