What is the difference between gauge and absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure (psig) is measured relative to the surrounding atmosphere, while absolute pressure (psia) is measured relative to a true vacuum. A tire reading 30 psig sits at about 44.7 psia.
Why does this assume standard atmospheric pressure?
Converting gauge to absolute pressure requires knowing the actual local atmospheric pressure at the time of the reading, which varies with weather and altitude. This calculator uses the standard sea-level value of 14.696 psi, the same convention almost all textbook conversions use unless a specific local reading is given.
