How is angle of depression calculated?
It is the arctangent of the vertical distance divided by the horizontal distance, the same right-triangle relationship used for slope and grade, just described from the viewpoint of looking down at something below eye level.
What is the difference between angle of depression and angle of elevation?
Angle of depression is measured downward from a horizontal line of sight, looking down at a lower object. Angle of elevation is measured upward from horizontal, looking up at a higher object. For the same two points, both angles are numerically equal, just measured from opposite viewpoints.
Where is this used in construction or surveying?
It is commonly used to find the height or distance of an object from a known vantage point, such as estimating the depth of an excavation from its edge, or sighting distances in site surveying.
