Ramp Slope Calculator (ADA)
Construction & Home ImprovementCalculate the required run and ramp length for a given rise, using ADA-standard slope ratios.
Required Run
Horizontal run needed at the selected slope ratio.
Ramp Surface Length
24.08
Actual sloped surface length of the ramp, slightly longer than the run.
Slope Angle
4.76
Ramp slope expressed as an angle from horizontal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ADA maximum ramp slope?
The Americans with Disabilities Act sets a maximum running slope of 1 in 12 for a standard accessible ramp, meaning at least 12 inches of horizontal run for every 1 inch of rise. Steeper than that is not ADA compliant for a standard ramp.
Should I always use the maximum 1:12 slope?
1:12 is the maximum allowed, not necessarily the best choice. A gentler slope, 1:16 or 1:20, is easier and safer for wheelchair users, especially over a long run, and is often preferred when there is enough space.
Does this include landing requirements?
No, this calculates the ramp run and length for a single continuous slope only. ADA rules also require a level landing at the top and bottom, and typically after every 30 feet of run, which are not included in this calculation.
