Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ADA maximum ramp slope?

The Americans with Disabilities Act sets a maximum running slope of 1 in 12 for a standard accessible ramp, meaning at least 12 inches of horizontal run for every 1 inch of rise. Steeper than that is not ADA compliant for a standard ramp.

Should I always use the maximum 1:12 slope?

1:12 is the maximum allowed, not necessarily the best choice. A gentler slope, 1:16 or 1:20, is easier and safer for wheelchair users, especially over a long run, and is often preferred when there is enough space.

Does this include landing requirements?

No, this calculates the ramp run and length for a single continuous slope only. ADA rules also require a level landing at the top and bottom, and typically after every 30 feet of run, which are not included in this calculation.
