Why does this use a different density than a lumber weight calculator?
A freshly cut log still holds a lot of water, called green wood, which is significantly heavier per cubic foot than the same species after kiln drying. This calculator uses green wood densities; a dried, milled board uses the lower dry densities in the Lumber Weight Calculator.
How is log volume calculated?
A log is treated as a cylinder, using pi times the radius squared times the length, based on the diameter and length entered.
Does bark affect the estimate?
This is an approximation based on a clean cylindrical shape and typical species density. Bark, taper along the log length, and moisture content at the time of cutting can all shift the real weight somewhat.
